If you're publishing a blog post, sometimes you don't want the world to see it? Of course, it's not always the case, considering how WordPress private posts are a great way for corporate internal communications, restricted content and documents that regular customers don't need to see.

Private WordPress posts block unauthorized users from that content. Only some logged in users will navigate to the post and see what's on it.

One advantage of a separate WordPress post is the power you have when granting access to users. As you do not have to show the post to all users. If you have a blog post with SEO guidelines for your writers, you restrict entry to those not listed as Authors.

The process is simple to create private posts. Therefore, we will guide on creating a private post, as soon as explaining some cases in which WordPress private posts will be useful.

Some situations in which WordPress private posts are useful

Here are some situations where private posts can be helpful:

  • For product launches - One of the advantages of a separate post or page is that it is still published. Because some stakeholders are often involved with new ideas and product launches, it is advisable to place the post in a live environment and lock all guests. Administrators have full control over stakeholders viewing their own page.

  • For content or design edits - Although sandboxing is a preferred way of developers, many bloggers prefer to publish posts and format the post with a live post. No need to press the Preview button and it will give you a real-world test of how content appears. Not only that, you will run content by your editors in that published template.

  • For an exclusive community - Some forums and community members are private because of exclusivity.

  • For internal reference and training pages - This is one of the common ways to use WordPress private posts. A written guide, customer support training module, or something of this type, doesn't need the highest security. However, website visitors do not have to view this information.

  • A separate blog - Some people like to keep a diary without the pressure of others to view it. A private WordPress post will give you an official publishing atmosphere instead of previewing the post and archiving it as a draft. In addition, it still gives you the option to share the post with friends or family.

  • Specialized content - You will want to lock content specifically for special users. Although sharing private posts with specific groups of users is best done with a content portal plugin or membership website. Think of the private post option.

Is private writing a good choice for sensitive information?

By default, anyone with the user role of Editor or Administrator will be able to view private posts on your site. They will control the change in privacy settings. Keep this in mind when working in an environment where there are many editors or administrators. There will be someone who should not read a private post, or they accidentally (or purposely) make the post public without your knowledge.

Moreover, private posts are not safes. I do not recommend publishing any sensitive information with private WordPress posts. For example, lawyers and real estate agents should not publish contracts. Similarly, e-commerce companies should avoid disclosing customer information.

In general, private posts create hidden parts of your page - not completely protected sections. It is an advantage when you do not want to disturb users, while maintaining a stable working environment

Are the pictures in a private post still private?

Images are technically available to the public, even if you publish them as part of a private post. Anyone will get these images if they have an image URL. Finally, the Authors on your page will see images in the media library.

Some user roles view and edit private posts. These roles include:

By default, only private administrators and editors can view private posts. But, if you want to show your content to specific groups of users (like family members or colleagues), the WP JV Post Reading plugin will help you solve that problem.

If you are a little more advanced with your WordPress knowledge, you also use the WordPress user role and the User role editor plugin to grant additional user roles to read_private_posts and read_private_pages capabilities. This will also allow those user roles to view private posts and pages.
